ICTD Case Studies - Access & Infrastructure
Project Description
Implement a national network of owner-operated computer centers with Internet access (information kiosks) — part cybercafes, part digital town halls — that earn income from a broad range of small transactions using low-cost wireless technology.
Project Objectives
To bridge the digital gap that is preventing the poor from sharing the benefits of the Information Age.
Partners Involved
Indian Institute of Technology, n-Logue Communications
Impact: Costs and Benefits
Provide poorly educated villagers with direct access to government officials and records as well as to online services such as banking and medical consultations.
Lessons Learned
Information kiosk operators failed to adequately explain and promote their services. A huge amount of awareness generation is needed.
Sustainability Factors
Information kiosk operators charge modest fees for services that can range from Internet browsing and email, daily computer classes, video conferences, etc.
