Tanzania: The Kasulu and Mtabila Internet Project

The Kasulu Internet Project (KIP) is a rural development program that provides resources for education, health and economic development to the refugees of the Mtabila refugee camp.

Undertaken as a partnership of local and national government institutions along with NGOs and UN agencies it is based in Kasulu, a small town in the Kigoma region of western Tanzania.

Training programs, primary and secondary education, and health awareness programs along with income generating programs are helping to engender much needed resources. Its secondary objectives include encouraging cooperation between Burundians and Tanzanians. KIP has set up community information centres in different areas. Volunteers were mobilized to construct a building equipped with a solar power system to generate electricity and a VSAT terminal to receive Internet access. The cost of Internet access, maintenance etc. are met from the income generated by training programs.

KIP has demonstrated a novel way of bringing health and education facilities to both refugees as well as the rural community.
