ICTD Case Studies - Capacity Building
The project does not have a specific name and has been undertaken by UNESCO.
Project Description
The project was started to reduce educational disparities through the use of ICT. It was felt that ICTs can help reach those who have remained out of the reach of conventional education methods.
Project Objectives
Its objectives include expanding learning opportunities, improving the quality of education and enhancing indirectly the freedom of speech and expression.
Intended Beneficiaries
Students and teachers in schools located in deprived areas are the intended beneficiaries. Also included in the list of beneficiaries are teacher trainers and lecturers of twenty-four colleges.
Partners Involved
Undertaken by UNESCO, the project is being implemented by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. The Ministry will be helped by a number of teacher training institutions in the implementation of this program.
Impact: Costs and Benefits
The project has had many positive outcomes since its conception in 2002. At least two mobile ICT education units have been established which serve a number of deprived communities. Local content on specific topics is being disseminated through an ICT based network. Apart from this, a number of teacher trainers and teachers have been successfully trained in ICT.
Constraints/Challenges
High levels of illiteracy and poverty make this project extremely challenging. Only a few schools were equipped with computers and even those were not connected to the Internet.
Sustainability Factors
Once it gains enough popularity, the project is liable to receive local funding for long-term sustainability.
