Children of Tsunami: A Regional Communications Initiative

Sumontha, Beam and Boom are three ordinary Asians who have shown extraordinary courage, resilience and resourcefulness as they coped with multiple challenges of rebuilding their lives after the Tsunami. Theirs is one of eight families TVE Asia Pacific have followed throughout 2005, as part of an empathetic communications initiative called Children of Tsunami: Rebuilding the Future.

From February to December 2005, local TV journalists and film makers in the four affected countries - India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand - made monthly visits to eight children, their families and communities and explored how individuals are coping with the losses and grief; what are the unmet needs and unresolved issues in recovery; and whether the pledges of aid and debt relief are really working.

Based on monthly filming and journalistic investigations, the initiative produced television, video and web stories for a global audience. It is a multi-media project.

All content is available free to all TV broadcasters, as well as to any civil society, educational or activist organization.

Multimedia outputs include:

• five-minute video reports released monthly
• broadcasts on national and regional TV channels in Asia-Pacific and beyond
• still images, text updates and links on a dedicated website
• full-length documentary
• TV content versioned into key Asian languages
• teachers' guide online for using Children of Tsunami products in the classroom
