THE CODEBREAKERS, a two-part documentary that investigates how countries are using free/open source software (FOSS) for development, first shown on BBC World TV, was translated into Uzbek and aired on Uzbek TV during September/October 2006.

This was a joint initiative of UNDP's Project on Assisting the Government of Uzbekistan in the Formulation and Implementation of ICT for Development Policy (ICTP) and Uzbek Television, as part of their series of educational programmes on television that focused on ICT for development - "Tarraqiyot Sari” (Towards the Development).

Tarraqiyot Sari began in June 2005 to raise public awareness on ICT for development issues. The Codebreakers was their 13th television programme. It was broadcast on "Yoshlar (The Youth) television channel which covers Uzbekistan and other neighbouring countries in Central Asia.

Initially, The Codebreakers was planned for broadcast only once. However, due to popular demand, it was retransmitted two more times. The broadcasting schedule was as follows:

The Codebreakers (Part 1)

27 September 2006 at 17:40

28 September 2006 at 12:20

11 October 2006 at 19:40

The Codebreakers (Part 2)

28 September 28, 2006 at 17:40

29 September 2006 at 12:20

12 October 2006 at 19:40

The compressed version of the documentary is publicly available and can be downloaded from the ICTP website.

The crew of the independent producers who made The Codebreakers visited nearly a dozen countries around the world to see how the adoption of FOSS presents opportunities for industry and capacity development, software piracy reduction, and localization and customization for diverse cultural and development needs.

Stories from The Codebreakers include computer and Internet access for school children in Africa, reaching the poor in Brazil, tortoise breeding programmes in the Galapagos, connecting villages in Spain, and disaster management in Sri Lanka. The documentary also includes interviews from key figures around the world.

The International Open Source Network (IOSN), UNDP Asia-Pacific Development Information Programme (UNDP-APDIP), International Development Research Centre of Canada and UNESCO have participated in the production of this documentary.
