This publication explores and shares the vast body of working knowledge, practical experience, and insight gained from projects implemented across the Asia-Pacific region and funded by the Pan-Asia ICT R&D Grants Programme between 2002-2005. The 56 projects from 14 different countries are focused on testing and applying innovative ICT solutions to development problems. Specifically, they focus on access to information and communication; capacity building and education; policy and social research; technical innovation; environment and agriculture; and health and medicine.The publication profiles the 56 projects, providing information on each project’s development from the research context, target beneficiaries and outputs through its results and outcomes. The profiles are complemented by an analysis summarizing key lessons learned, common challenges faced and successful models used to implement project work and create lasting impact.
It is a useful reference not only for development practitioners and researchers working to promote information and communications technology for development (ICT4D), but also for policy makers and donor agencies supporting or planning to support ICT4D projects and programmes.
The Pan-Asia ICT R&D Grants Programme was a joint initiative of the United Nations Development Programme’s Asia-Pacific Development Information Programme (UNDP-APDIP), the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), of Canada, and the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC). It was administered by the Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC).
