The Fiji Times, 23 August 2005, page 4. By Vasemaca Rarabici

Students learning Fijian, media organisations and educational institution will soon become the beneficiary of a project that will see the invention of a spell checker for the Fijian Language.

The project known as 'Fijian Spell Checker for Open Office' will be carried out by William Blanke and Paul Geraghty of the University of the South Pacific.

This project is one of the four successful applicants for the University of the South Pacific - International Open Source Network (USP-IOSN) Microgrants.

The other three projects include a point-of-sale system for small enterprises, tiki-maps and tracking software of two-dimensional flows.

"Adding a Fijian spell checking dictionary to this free/open source software should strengthen the use of the Fijian language in print," the proposal submitted on the project said.
