Gender Perspectives on the Information Society: South Asia Pre-WSIS Seminar, Bangalore, India, 18-19 April 2005

The second phase of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) which will be held in November 2005 provides an opportunity to take feminist concerns from South Asia to a global forum that will make crucial decisions with implications for women of the South.

The seminar brought feminist thinkers, activists, organisations, writers and women in media together to discuss women in the information society and develop a sustainable strategy for feminist engagement in the WSIS process.

The seminar tapped the rich resources developed by feminists in the areas of information and communication technology policy and practices, and their impact on women. Issues discussed included women’s roles and needs in e-governance, cyber regulation, freedom of expression, right to information and communication, and media.

A video of the seminar was produced and screened at the WSIS Gender Caucus Conference and the Heinrich Boell Foundation in September 2005.

At WSIS, this video was screened at the UNDP Sharing the Future Pavilion (Stand No. 1307.1). DVDs of APDIP ICT4D Publications and Videos (including the video of this seminar) were distributed there.

This video was also be screened at a WSIS event organized by the Heinrich Boell Foundation. Details are as follows:
