APDIP Releases A Compilation of Case Studies on the Use of Free and Open Source Software for Development

This is a compilation of 14 case studies on the successful deployment of free and open source software (FOSS) in select projects from Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe and Latin America. In each case study, the reason for choosing to use FOSS together with the development, implementation and impact of the FOSS applications are discussed. The benefits obtained and challenges encountered, as well as any valuable lessons learned are also highlighted.

Asia Source II: Technology for NGOs and SMEs, Yawitra Resort, Sukabumi, Indonesia, 22-30 January 2007

The First Model e-Village in Sri Lanka Paves the Way for 24-Hour Connectivity in Other Rural Communities

Sri Lanka's first outdoor wireless computer network is now up and running. Surprisingly, it is not in Colombo. It is not even in any of the other key places. It was installed in Mahavilachchiya, a little known village, 40 km from the nearest town Anuradhapura, and surrounded three sides by the Vilpattu jungle.

APDIP seeks Intern to assist in content development and knowledge management

The internship involves assisting in: (i) the management of online communities of practice on different ICTD issues using websites, mailing lists, wikis and other tools; and (ii) the production and management of APDIP’s knowledge products and outreach materials. The internship is for a period of 4-6 months starting 1 February 2007. The deadline for submission of application is 18 December 2006.

Philippines FOSS Act of 2006

Congress is set to conduct hearings on the proposed Free Open Source Software (FOSS) Act of 2006, which mandates the use of open-source software in government. If enacted, the law is likewise expected to benefit small companies. (Source: Tom S. Noda, Computerworld Philippines, 14 November 2006)

APDIP Donates 15 e-Primers to Wikibooks

APDIP realizes how fast a published book gets out-of-date, especially in the fast-moving field of information and communications technology for development (ICT4D). APDIP has therefore donated 15 of its e-Primers to Wikibooks for free use and update (see list below).

ICTD and e-Governance Community of Practice Meeting, Tallinn, Estonia, 4-8 December 2006

The UNDP Regional Centre Bangkok (RCB), UNDP Bratislava Regional Centre (BRC) and the e-Governance Academy of Estonia are organizing the first joint Asia-Pacific and Europe-CIS inter-regional ICTD/e-Governance Community of Practice meeting for UNDP Programme Staff, government counterparts, representatives of the business community and civil society. It will be held in Tallinn, Estonia between 4 and 8 December 2006.

Workshops on Capacity Building in Public Policy Issues of Internet Use for Business Development in Asia and the Pacific
