APDIP seeks Intern to assist in content development and knowledge management

The internship involves assisting in: (i) the management of online communities of practice on different ICTD issues using websites, mailing lists, wikis and other tools; and (ii) the production and management of APDIP’s knowledge products and outreach materials. The internship is for a period of 4-6 months starting 1 February 2007. The deadline for submission of application is 18 December 2006.

I. Background

The Asia-Pacific Development Programme (APDIP) is an initiative of UNDP that aims to promote the development and applications of information and communications technology (ICT) for sustainable human development in the Asia-Pacific region.

APDIP aims to meet its goals by focusing on three inter-related core areas: (i) policy development and dialogue; (ii) access; and (iii) content development and knowledge management.

APDIP collaborates with national governments, regional, international and multi-lateral development organizations, UN agencies, educational and research organizations, civil society groups, and the private sector in integrating ICTs in the development process. It does so by employing a dynamic mix of strategies – awareness raising, capacity building, technical assistance and advice, research and development, knowledge sharing and partnership building.

II. Expectations

At the end of the internship, the intern will:

  • Have a good grasp of different issues of ICT for development (ICTD) in the Asia-Pacific region, including e-commerce, e-government, e-learning, e-policies and –strategies, free/open source software, gender and ICT, Internet governance, localization, and poverty reduction and ICT.
  • Gain experience in managing and promoting knowledge on ICTD issues.
  • Understand communities of practices and have the experience in managing them using various approaches, tools and technologies.
  • Be familiar with using the tools and functions of the Plone content management system.
  • Understand UNDP’s priorities and strategies in development in the Asia-Pacific region.

III. Roles and Responsibilities

APDIP is seeking an intern to assist in content development and knowledge management. The internship involves:

1. Assisting in the management of online communities of practice on different ICTD issues using websites, mailing lists, wikis and other tools.

APDIP’s website <http://www.apdip.net> is a platform in which ICTD practitioners, staff from the 25 UNDP Country Offices, partners and the general public interested in ICTD issues can find useful resources by country and by theme, APDIP’s news and events update, and information about who we are and what we do.

APDIP is also managing a number of online initiatives including:

APDIP’s website and some of the online initiatives are well-known by those working in the field of ICTD. APDIP and related sites are now providing 3 GigaBytes worth of indexed and searchable content,                 and attracting over 20,000 unique visitors each month.

APDIP is seeking an intern to:

  • Update the website with latest resources, case studies, news, events, etc. using the Plone Content Management System
  • Moderate and facilitate discussion on mailing lists
  • Coordinate responses to queries sent in to info@apdip.net or via the websites
  • Monitor the Wikibooks
  • Improve user-friendliness, navigability and interactivity on websites

2. Assisting in the production and management of APDIP’s knowledge products and outreach materials including:

  • research and analysis
  • repackaging information for different target audience
  • working with selected authors in developing content
  • quality checks of all products 
  • liaising with editors and printers
  • dissemination to relevant users and at relevant events

The intern will work closely with Christine Apikul, APDIP’s Programme Specialist for Content Development and Knowledge Management, and relevant members of the APDIP Team.

IV. Qualifications

  • Current enrolment in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) at the time of application and during the internship
  • Interest in ICTD issues. Studying a related field preferred
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in managing information and/or knowledge
  • Some experience in using a content management system, Plone preferred
  • Good command of written and spoken English and ability to communicate effectively
  • A team player and self-starter, able to work with minimum supervision, with sound judgment
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills and experience in working effectively in a multicultural environment

PLEASE NOTE: Internships are for a maximum duration of six months and are not paid, and there is no guarantee of a fulltime employment on the completion of internships.
