National IT Awareness Seminar, Cambodia

APDIP supported and participated in Cambodia's first National IT Awareness Seminar, Phnom Penh, 11-13 September 2001.

The event was broadcasted live over national TV and radio. His Excellency, Samdech Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Royal Government of Cambodia, in his opening remarks outlined six main elements instrumental in developing Cambodia's IT Vision:-

  1. Development of Telecommunications infrastructure;
  2. Expand use of Internet;
  3. Language - standardisation of Khmer code for wider computer use. Every Cambodian should strive to learn four languages;
  4. Computer literacy must be promoted and included in the curriculum of every school, faculty and university;
  5. Encourage private sector participation in IT development and skills transfer. Government policies to ensure sound management of foreign direct investment; and,
  6. Protect intellectual capital and use of Internet for development purposes. Prevent abuse of technology for crime, and other purposes contrary to morality and tradition.

The seminar was hosted by the Royal Government of Cambodia's National ICT Development Authority (NiDA) with the support of UNDP Cambodia, APDIP, and UNESCO.
