Datuk Dr. Syed Othman is currently the President and CEO of Malaysia's first virtual university, UNITAR (Universiti Tun Abdul Razak). Prior to his current position, Datuk Dr. Syed Othman was the Deputy Director General of the Institute of Islamic Understanding (IKIM), Malaysia.
Having been an academician for over twenty years, he has served in four universities, namely; University Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia as Dean of the Economic Faculty, Universiti Islam Antarabangsa as Dean of the Economic Faculty and Universiti Utara Malaysia as Deputy Vice Chancellor. While in UKM he was appointed as Associate Professor and as Professor of Economics at the UIA.
He has also served in the Board of Trustees, International Islamic Bank and Development Institute in Islamabad, and member of the First Committee for the International Islamic Economic Association in London.
Apart from publishing academic writings on Islamic economy and current issues, Datuk Dr. Syed Othman is involved in various public and private activities such as Chairman of the Board of Directors, Prima Prai, Director of Takaful Nasional, Director of Asia Unit Trust, Director of the Melaka Institute of Management, Director of the Centre for Islamic Management Studies in Singapore, Director of ITTAR, Director of United Multimedia, Director of the MARA Education Foundation, and Syariah Advisor for Singapore Unit Trust Global Ethical Fund.
Datuk Syed Othman holds a PhD in Econometrics from University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, MS Statistics from University of Wisconsin, USA and B. Ec. (Hons.) from University Malaya
