Opened in 1969, there are currently 1916 students in this school with 100 teachers. The school serves the Ayer Hitam community of 20,000 people. The community are mainly engaged in agriculture.

In 2001, SMK Ayer Hitam registered a 100% pass for the STPM examinations.
The school has a computer club with 400 members. The club is equipped with 6 computers and internet connection. Apart from basic computer applications, the Club also teaches AutoCad.
