Abstract of Project

Low-cost rural connectivity is feasible today with the range of the innovative wireless technologies. Our proposal is to create a complete solution in network design and set to work with several different network configurations that are believed to be the next generation intelligent communication infrastructures.

Our proposal aims to bring the cost down so that the poor living in low-density rural communities will have both voice and data services on the same wireless access and backbone.

Technically, our proposed solution will use enhanced wireless technology by combining voice-over-IP (VoIP) communications with wireless installation using WiFi standard in the non-license bands. This will allow simultaneous voice and data support carried on the same infrastructure. This design also aims to replace the traditional phone sets and apply where no copper infrastructure is in place.

Economically, this research project aims to help poor people have access to their own phone service and contact number so that they can receive and make long distance, international calls for free or with little cost.

This pilot project is expected as a model, which appears to offer the greatest potential for financial viability will tend to generate the most appeal for further replication and expansion.
