1. Objective
This research project will give brief explanation about good impact from F root server mirror in Indonesia to Internet community and Internet researcher in Indonesia. In the end of this reearch project will give some advice to APJII (Indonesia Internet Service Provider Association) and Internet community how to maintain and evaluate the F root server mirror in Indonesia and as evaluation and recommendation for next root server mirroring project to APJII (Indonesia Internet Service Provider Association).
1.2.General Objective
This research project will give brief explanation about good impact from F root server mirror in Indonesia to Internet community and Internet researcher in Indonesia.
2.2. Specific Objectives
We will monitor TCP and UDP on port 53 (DNS port) on PC server measurement. From some DNS measurement metrics such as round trip time, queries hit, queries classification, source and destination address we defined before we can answer some questions such as: how good impact of F root server in Indonesia ? and how far does the good impact can be ? and does F root server really utilized by Internet users in Indonesia ?
2. Methodology
Our research project is devided into four steps:
- Define metrics measurement
- Measurement design
- Data gathering
- Data Analysis
Define Metric Measurement
In order to get DNS information on F root server, we would like define measurement metrics as below:
- Response time (RTT)
- Queries hit
- Queries classification
- Source and destination address
We will monitor TCP and UDP on port 53 on PC server measurement. From these metrics above we can answer some questions such as: how good impact of F root server in Indonesia ? and how far does the good impact can be ? and does F root server really utilized by Internet users in Indonesia ?
Measurement Design
The original F root network shown on figures 1.
Figure 1. F Root Server Network Configuration
For measurement purpose, we plan to put one PC server connected directly to switch and configure switch to do port mirroring. So our PC server measurement will get same traffic as F root server. The network configuration after we put PC server shown on figure 2.

Figure 2. F Root Server Network Configuration With PC Server Measurement
Data Gathering
We plan to do data gathering for one month using tcpdump and other DNS tools such as DNStop, DNStat, and NeTraMet. We found from references that tcpdump raw file results require large space of disk. So we will optimize the measurement sampling time for tcpdump.
Data analysis
After we have data, we will have to process and analyze data. Data analysis based on statistical analysis including description statistic and time series analysis.
1. Project Beneficiaries
Initially our project will collect and analyze DNS data from F root server. In our observation none doing root server mirror research in Indonesia. So this project will bring Internet community in Indonesia to do some research beside as end user. The data from PC server measurement can be utilized not only by us, but Internet community can have the data and do some simple DNS data analysis.
2. Project Sustainability
After the project is completed we will use PC server measurement for round trip time (RTT) DNS response time monitoring on the web. We can have long term F root server monitoring in Indonesia. This work will involve Internet Service Providers (ISP).
3. Project Timeline
Stage | Description | Period |
1 | Difine metrics measurement, literature review, and discussion with root server operator | February – March 2005 |
2 | Measurement design | March – April 2005 |
3 | Data gathering and Interim report | April – May 2005 |
4 | Data Analysis | May – June 2005 |
5 | Final report and discussion | June – July 2005 |
4. Project Output
More tangible output from this project:
- Papers to a least two conferences or meetings.
- Project reports to Internet community, especially to APJII (Indonesia Internet Service Provide Association) for next root server mirroring project recommendations and strategies in Indonesia.
- Documentation and DNS data archive in CD-R/DVD-R will provide/dessiminated to other Internet researcher in Indonesia.
5. Project Monitoring
The Project monitoring will be realized by submission of monthly reports on of each stages, difficulties encountered, and lessons learned for feedback. Our projects will be supervised by root server operator and some researcher from WIDE project Japan.
