Grant awarded in March 2005 to Indian Institute of Technology Bombay to survey the extent to disseminate crop advisory and disease forecasting services to farmers in a resource-constrained environment.
Project Leader: Krithi Ramamritham
Recipient Institution: Indian Institute of Technology Bombay
Amount: USD 30,010
Duration: 12 Months
Commencement Date: October 2005
Project Abstract
Development Problem to be addressed
Disseminating crop advisory and disease forecasting services to farmers in a resource constrained environment typical of rural areas in the developing world.
Technologies to be used and developed
aAQUA Q&A forum, CorDECT wireless technologies, Metos disease forecasting equipment and software, Multi-lingual databases, Multi-lingual interfaces, Caching internet content
Expected research results
- Data collection of sensors at kiosk (tele-centres) measuring temperature, humidity, wind speed etc. as inputs for forecasting probabilities of pest attacks.
- Interpreting the data collected at the kiosks, data aggregation, cleaning, analysis and modeling and validation of disease forecasts (data mining and validation).
- Data on the use of internet technologies within agri-extension centres. Since the use of ICTs will add additional load on the experts, we will document how experts make this transition and what percentage of their time is spent with ICTs and what their perceptions are.
