Selangor Government’s Initiative in Bridging the Digital Divide

The project aims for Selangor residents to become an ICT literate society by 2005 and to reduce the digital divide between rural and urban residents by 30 percent in 2004.

Achievements

Under the initiative, the state government established 64 ICT centres of which 46 were located in rural areas. The focus on rural communities is based on computer literacy rates of 20 percent in contrast to 70 to 80 percent in urban areas.

The state government also introduced computers to children through the Community Development Department’s KEMAS kindergartens. In addition, local village heads participated in a three-month computer training course.
