ICT4D-related projects managed by UNDP Nepal
Empowering Communities through Cyber Cafes and Telecentres
This is part of the Rural Urban Partnership Programme (RUPP) in UNDP Nepal. At present work is underway to provide technical support to establish telecentres and cyber cafes in eight districts that RUPP is currently working in - Ilam, Dhankuta, Gorkha, Bardiya, Dang, Surkhet, Doti and Kanchanpur. RUPP also works to provide training to the operators, identify the area,mobilise communities, and coordinate the linkage between communities, Nepal Telecom Authority, Municipality and VDCs for effective implementation of the project.
ICTs for Development
The project aims to build government capacity to implement 15 rural pilot telecenters and subsequent national rollout. Additional projects such as agricultural information, distance learning, tele-medicine, productive economic activities, environment protection, and natural disaster mitigation could follow.
Database for monitoring and reporting on foreign aid and donor assistance
A component of a project aimed at enhancing the capacity of the foreign Aid Coordination Division/Ministry of Finance among others to prioritize externally assisted programmes.
Development Support Information System (DSIS)
As an endeavor towards documenting the information from research and other studies on issues pertaining to poverty alleviation and making it easily accessible to the development professionals, planners and partners, Development Information Resource and Rural Access Project (Nep/03/M04) has developed this Development Support Information System (DSIS). It is expected that DSIS would be useful for assessing data and references while designing development policies and programs, learning from both the best practices and failures.
Development of Nepali Devenagari UNICODE
A component of the UNDP Project - ICT for Poverty Reduction (NEP/00/008) - which focused on preparatory activities to launch a telecenter project.
GIS for local development planning, decision making and monitoring development activities
An IT/ICT component of NEP/04/002 - Decentralized Local Governance Support Programme and continuation from its predecessor programmes. The programme aims at: (a) building the capacity of the Local Bodies, Ministry of Local Development and National Planning Commission to promote decentralized governance (b) design and implement positive discriminatory Village Development Programme (c) mainstream HIV/AIDS in development activities.
District Enterprise Information System
An IT/ICT component of the Micro-enterprise Development Programme (MEDEP). The programme is designed to deliver an integrated package of services including entrepreneurship development, skill training, marketing support, appropriate technology and micro-credit in developing enterprises and creating additional job opportunities in the rural areas. The main goal of this programme is to reduce poverty in rural areas through the development of micro-entrepreneurs with 70 percent women participation from low-income families, and creation of micro-enterprise service delivery mechanism that will enable low-income families to achieve sustainable livelihoods based on local demand.
Urban Information System including municipal poverty and resource maps
An IT/ICT component of “Rural-Urban Partnership Programme (RUPP) with main focus on urban development management capacity building and public private partnership for poverty alleviation, a host of information systems have been developed to support municipal administration such as Integrated Property Tax software. To assist the municipal corporations with social projects, information systems related to HIV/AIDs, Internally Displaced Persons (IDP), Poverty Maps, etc. have also been developed. Also, with a view to strengthening trade linkages between urban and rural areas, there are information services like agricultural market price information (price bulletin boards). Also, as part of the transparent municipal governance and related services to the public, a few municipal corporations have implemented e-governance and B2B e-commerce.
