Application of GIS to Land-use Management in PNG: Remote Sensing Land Use Initiative
Contact Person(s): Tony Torea, Programme Officer (Energy & Environment), UNDP Papua New Guinea
Project Period: November 2002 - December 2006
Outputs/Outcomes
Through this project, the PNG civil society has, for the first time, free access to accurate and current pictorial information about their country. Papua New Guinea institutions, including NGOs, government and academia, will be able to obtain technical data on land utilization for a range of applications ranging from local land-use planning to research projects. In addition, the project will create a University graduate skilled in GIS data use who will be able to carry these skills into the private and public sectors.
A satellite coverage database containing information on land-use. This includes database components showing changes in land-use practices over the past 25 years and the distribution of human populations.
Awareness and information materials detailing the state of land use in PNG and its transformation over space and time.
Types of outputs will include a freely accessible, user-friendly web-site providing satellite imagery and associated data, as well as analytical products in the form of CD-ROM, maps and reports.
Interactive GIS planning tools designed explicitly for provincial governments based on a coupling of the 2000 Census data and the satellite image coverage.
A UPNG GIS teaching center for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
