Grant Amount: US$ 30,000

Keywords: INTERNET, CAPACITY BUILDING, FREE AND OPEN SOURCE, THAILAND, ASIA-PACIFIC

Geographic coverage: Thailand, Asia-Pacific

Objective

The objective of this project is to develop mobile classroom facilities using Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) technology.

Research context

This project addresses problems associated with mobility in e-Learning platforms. Mobility allows teachers to design and conduct meaningful interactive courses by reaching students at their Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), personal computer or laptop. The project integrates SIP with a free and open source e-learning platform called VClass, to create an easy and effective way to reach students during a class and to extract learning objects from mobile resources. The project aims to produce a mobility-enhanced VClass e-learning platform called a Mobile Classroom that provides greater flexibility for learning environments.

Target beneficiaries

The primary target beneficiaries of the new functionality offered by the VClass SIP-based Mobile Classroom are the many learning institutions in the Asia-Pacific region who use the free and open source software VClass to power online, web-enhanced and hybrid education programmes. Other institutions interested in e-learning may also benefit from the results of this project.

Outputs

The project output is a mobility-enhanced VClass e-learning platform. The mobile classroom will be available both as a web accessible Java application and for installation on mobile and stationary computing devices. Courseware on cultural studies will be archived and made public to researchers and students.
